Day 2: Island Hopping on Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast, board a traditional dugout canoe or motorised boat to explore the 29 islands scattered across Lake Bunyonyi, the second-deepest lake in Africa. Visit Punishment Island — once used to abandon unmarried pregnant women — and Bwama Island, home to a historic leprosy colony turned community school. Stop at Sharp's Island for a guided walk and a chance to interact with local fishermen on their morning catch. Return to the lodge for a lakeside lunch and an afternoon of swimming or relaxed birdwatching from the shore.
Day 3: Batwa Cultural Experience & Nature Walk
Spend the morning with the Batwa pygmies, the original forest-dwellers of the Bwindi region, who were displaced when the national park was gazetted. A Batwa guide leads you through a living cultural experience: tracking animal prints, gathering wild herbs, starting fire with sticks, and hearing the haunting songs the Batwa once sang to calm mountain gorillas. In the afternoon, join a nature walk along the lakeshore wetlands, identifying the over 200 bird species recorded here including the African finfoot and malachite kingfisher.
Day 4: Hiking the Bunyonyi Hills
Lace up your boots for a guided hike into the terraced hills surrounding the lake, rewarded with panoramic views across the water and the distant Virunga volcanoes on the Rwandan border. Local guides point out medicinal plants, ancient farmsteads, and schools built with tourism revenue. Visit a local market village to meet farmers and artisans before descending back to the lakeshore for a well-earned lunch. The afternoon is free for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply reading in a hammock above the water.
Day 5: Kayaking & Sunset Boat Cruise
Spend the morning exploring the lake's quieter inlets and reed beds by kayak, paddling at your own pace through channels where hippos occasionally surface in the early hours. Mid-morning, stop at a lakeside community to learn how local women weave the distinctive Kigezi baskets. In the late afternoon, board a boat for a guided sunset cruise to the lake's widest point, watching egrets, herons, and cormorants roost as the Rwandan hills turn golden behind you. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the lodge with a glass of locally produced passion-fruit wine.
Day 6: Return to Kampala
After a relaxed final breakfast at the water's edge, check out of the lodge and begin the drive back to Kampala via the picturesque crater lakes region around Kabale. Stop at the viewpoint overlooking Lake Mutanda and its volcanic backdrop for photographs, then continue through the Kigezi highlands — often called the Switzerland of Africa — before descending to the main road. Arrive in Kampala by evening and transfer to your hotel or residence.
